Experience the Sagra della Cannelletta, a beloved 59-year-old folk festival in Castel Viscardo (TR) that celebrates the region's seasonal food and wine. This lively event perfectly blends traditional local cuisine with diverse musical entertainment, promising evenings filled with joy and lighthearted fun. Originating in the summer of 1966 as the “Sagra della Cannelletta col prosciutto e la porchetta,” the festival's name comes from the 'cannelletta' – the tap of a wine barrel. In the 1960s, when local wine production often exceeded wholesale demand, villagers would seek permission to sell their annual stock directly from these barrels. This direct pouring of wine, attracting small buyers and casual drinkers, became a festive occasion. The event quickly grew into a full-fledged celebration, kicking off with a parade featuring an allegorical float and the town band, while attendees enjoyed sandwiches, porchetta, and traditional donuts. Indulge in a rotating selection of daily specials, featuring hearty dishes like roasted duck, wild boar stew (cinghiale a buglione), and various pasta preparations such as maltagliati with zucchini flowers or duck, and pappardelle with wild boar, amatriciana, or arrabbiata sauce. Don't miss the arrosticini (grilled lamb skewers) and gnocchi with castrato (mutton) ragù. Throughout the festival, you can also enjoy fried mushrooms, tagliatelle with mushroom and sausage, and unique Umbrian pastas like umbrichelli with wild fennel and 'baffo' or cacio e pepe. Daily offerings include the 'Antipasto castellese' appetizer, fresh salads, crispy french fries, traditional 'tortucce' (except on Aug 19-21), and the classic Italian dessert 'tozzetti e vin santo.' Grilled meats are available every day, and on select evenings, look for specialities like coratella (offal stew), trippa (tripe), and tagliatelle with mushrooms, sausage, and truffle, or even truffle tartare.
