The famous Palio delle Barche, now in its 43rd edition, is a historical re-enactment of the bloody 1495 battle that saw Passignano del Lago at the center of military operations during the war between the noble Perugian families of Baglioni and Oddi. The four districts—Centro Storico, Centro Nuovo (or Centro Due), Oliveto, and San Donato—compete in a three-phase challenge. In the first phase, boats race on the water to the town's pier. From there, competitors hoist their boats onto their shoulders for a fast-paced run, mostly through the historic center, navigating a winding and difficult path of steep alleys and staircases. Upon returning to the pier, they re-enter the lake to conclude the race. During the preceding week, the Rioni of Passignano organize taverns where visitors can taste typical Trasimeno dishes and enjoy historical shows and costumed performances. From Monday to Thursday, individual Rioni practice for the race, while the General Rehearsal takes place on Friday. On Saturday evening, the Lords of the Rioni meet in the piazza for the Lancio della Sfida (Challenge Launch), where the reigning Rione challenges the others to a new race.
During the week leading up to the main event, the Rioni of Passignano host traditional taverns. Here, visitors can savor authentic local dishes and specialties from the Trasimeno region, offering a true taste of Umbrian culinary heritage.
From Monday to Thursday, the individual Rioni participate in practice sessions for the main race. The General Rehearsal is held on Friday. On Saturday evening, the Lords of the Rioni gather in the piazza for the Lancio della Sfida, where the current champion Rione issues a challenge to the others for the upcoming competition.
