Experience the thrill of a traditional equestrian tournament in Arezzo, where the city's four quarters compete in a medieval-style joust. Dating back to 1931 in its modern form, knights on horseback charge to strike a target with a lance, all while skillfully avoiding the flail wielded by a rotating automaton known as the Buratto.
Join us on Sunday, September 6th for the Giostra del Saracino! 💥 07:00 AM – The day kicks off with the first mortar shot. 📜 11:00 AM – The official Proclamation (Bando) is read, followed by the start of the historical parade featuring costumed figures, musicians, flag-wavers, and representatives from the four Quartieri. ⛪ 02:00 PM – The jousting knights receive a blessing in the churches of their respective Quartieri. 🏰 02:30 PM – The historical procession gathers in Piazza San Domenico. 🥁 03:00 PM – The grand historical parade begins, winding through the historic center to the Cathedral. ⛪ 03:15 PM – A blessing ceremony for the Quartieri takes place in Piazza Duomo. 🏇 03:30 PM – The magnificent historical parade continues its journey through the heart of Arezzo, heading towards Piazza Grande. 🏳️ 05:00 PM – The Giostra officially begins! Enjoy the opening ceremony with musicians and flag-wavers, the entrance of the eight jousters, and the reading of the Buratto's challenge. ⚔️ Immediately following – The Giostra del Saracino commences. Eight knights, two from each Quartiere, face the Buratto, aiming to score the highest points by striking the shield with their lances. 🏆 The day culminates with the Award Ceremony, where the Mayor presents the Golden Lance (Lancia d’Oro) to the winning Quartiere. 💥 A final mortar shot and lively celebrations for the victorious Quartiere bring the event to a close.
