The Calcio Storico Fiorentino is an ancient and spectacular historical re-enactment that sees the four historic neighborhoods of Florence challenge each other in a tournament. Also known as "calcio in livrea" or "calcio in costume," the event culminates with the final dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, the city's patron saint. Players wear 16th-century costumes, re-enacting a historic match from 1530 during the siege of Florence. The historical parade, with over 500 costumed participants, crosses the city center streets to Piazza Santa Croce.
